The recovery process included writing, which I used to explore my fears, tragedies, hopes and fantasies. It became imperative for me to sort out what I believed about God, spirituality, and to weave the truths of science into a personal cosmology. In addition to that, I needed to come to terms with being a gay man.The journey that led to drug addiction began in my late teens as an idealist young man who gravitated to what was left of the hippie movement in the early 1970s. I joined a religious commune called the Unified Family, which soon became known as Sun Myung Moons Unification Church, or the Moonies. A decade of dedication ended with disillusionment. The promised transformation from a mundane world of personal struggles to a grandiose vision of world peace and unity never materialized. It was not obvious to my young mind that such counterfeit visions were the currency of all charismatic religious figures. The transition from cult member to drug addict occurred seamlessly. Something in my personality thrives on extremes. I ran from life as a church member, and pursued death as a drug addict. Finally, in rehab, I realized that I had better calm down, collect my thoughts, and follow the suggestion of the old Moody Blues song, which said, Thinking is the best way to travel. The poems in this volume are vehicles for me to share something of my psychic journey.
